What's inside the Zhuyun pillow
No foam, no latex, no polyester fill, no chemical flame retardants or coatings. The Zhuyun is filled with seven natural materials, weighed out to a published recipe: 2,970 g total fill (±50 g tolerance). Every batch follows the same formula, and the fill weights were verified by a third-party laboratory inspection in 2023 against the maker's enterprise specification.
The seven fill materials
1. Bamboo beads — 2,400 g
The backbone of the pillow. Natural bamboo is lathe-turned into smooth, hollow round beads, about 8–9 mm across, that roll against each other when you shape the pillow, then lock into a firm, stable mass under weight. Bamboo is naturally hard for its weight, which is why the Zhuyun can be both moldable and unyielding. The hollow core does double duty: it keeps each bead light, and it lets air pass through and around the beads — the whole fill breathes instead of trapping heat the way foam does.
2. Cork oak bark — 280 g
Granules of natural cork — the bark of the cork oak, Quercus suber (the same bark used for wine corks). Mixed through the beads, the cork granules soften the contact between beads and add a slight elasticity to the fill mass. Cork bark is harvested without felling the tree.
3. Swartzia wood — 80 g
Beads of Swartzia spp., a very dense tropical hardwood (known in Chinese as hongtan, "red sandalwood" — a trade name, not a true sandalwood). Its weight adds heft and stability in small quantities. Swartzia is not listed in the CITES Appendices.
4. Wenge — 80 g
A dark, coarse-grained, heavy hardwood, added as hollow round beads. Like the Swartzia, it's present for density: small amounts of very heavy wood change how the whole fill mass settles.
5. Red sequoia wood — 60 g
Aromatic softwood, turned into hollow round beads, with a mild, clean scent. Scent note: the pillow has a light natural wood aroma when new, which fades with airing.
6. Fragrant cedar wood — 35 g
Naturally fragrant cedar, turned into hollow round beads. Cedar's aroma is part of why the pillow smells like a wood workshop — in a good way — when you first open the box.
7. Bodhi seeds — 35 g
Smooth seeds traditionally strung as prayer beads in China, kept in their natural, original shape — together with the cork, the only fill that isn't lathe-turned. In the Zhuyun they round out the fill texture.
Transparency note: Latin (botanical) names are confirmed for cork oak (Quercus suber) and Swartzia (Swartzia spp.). The maker's confirmations for the remaining materials' botanical names are pending, so we list those by their English and Chinese trade names rather than guess — this page will be updated when the documentation arrives.
Processing
All fill is natural and untreated — no dyes, no preservatives, no chemical treatments of any kind. Before packing, the fill is heat-sanitized, and the finished pillow is sealed into its casing at the workshop.
The casing: Evolon® anti-mite fabric
The fill is enclosed in Evolon®, a microfilament nonwoven made by Freudenberg (Germany). Evolon's fibers are densely packed into a tight web that dust mites and their allergens cannot pass through, which makes it a widely used physical anti-mite barrier in European bedding. Two things worth being precise about:
- The mite protection comes from the fabric's structure — not from any anti-mite chemical treatment, because there isn't one.
- Evolon is a fabric specification, not a medical claim. It keeps mites out of the fill; it doesn't treat allergies.
The pillowcases
Every Zhuyun ships with two pillowcases in premium Turkish fabrics — “Aura Fresh” and “Olive Oil”, included in the gift box at no extra charge. They are removable and machine-washable — wash the case, never the pillow. (Both pillowcases and the full gift-box set are pictured below.)
See the pillow itself: Zhuyun pillow — $249 early-bird, free U.S. shipping and a 30-night trial.
